Vintage Beverage: Champis

From Farbror Sid

Champis
is a Swedish soft drink created by Robert Roberts in 1910. It was initially marketed under different name but since 1918 it has been sold as Champis. Along with the soft drinks Sockerdricka, Citronil, Pomril and Pommac, Champis is one in the first generation of Swedish soft drinks. The recipe is a well-kept secret by the way.

Ephemera: Plonk!

Even more Swedish Soft Drink Labels?! Yep, you bet! How do you like these beauties? I've tried - not very easy - translating the Swedish text from the site where they were found:

"Sound effects soft drinks. These four spectacular soft drinks were on the market in 1985-1986. They were soon to be criticized for containing questionable chemical substances... (!!)
Flämt! - Came in light blue and light green design and tasted
smågodis. (various kinds of candy with a sometimes diffuse flavor to it)
Gulp! - With the taste of
sega bananer (banana flavored foamy candy) and had an intense yellow translucent color.
Plonk! (!!) - Perhaps the least known of the quartet with a taste of
godiskulor (ie, blueberries - and boysenberries candy flavourings)
Wroom! - Hallongelé (Raspberry jelly candy) colored beverage with the taste of ... raspberry jelly candy.

The images and the original Swedish text are found at den nostalgiska läsksidan via the (sometimes) very kind gåsmannen who also recommended this label collector site.

Swedish Actresses: Babette Bardot

Babette Bardot

"The bonafide star of MONDO TOPLESS is Babette Bardot, a Swedish-French stripper who claimed she was a distant cousin of Babette Bardot and would star as...er...Babette, the scene-stealing French harlot in COMMON LAW CABIN! The mysterious blonde bombshell reportedly also had an affair with Russ in-between films! She mangles the English language like nobody's business, but is never less than captivating in both films. You simply cannot take your eyes off this giantess with the eye-popping figure, and unfortunately she made only one other film (I, MARQUIS DE SADE) before disappearing off the face of the earth." - Mondo Topless review at www.dvddrive-in.com

Whether she really was Swedish is kind of beside the point? Whatever that is.

Music Video: The Walker Brothers at Millesgården

The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.

The song and the group is great and the sound is OK but the video quality is pretty poor but I wanted to show it because it is shot over here - or rather at the Millesgården sculpture park on Lidingö, Stockholm, Sweden. The year was 1966.

If you liked the music and if you didn't know it before you should check out Scott Walker.

Postcards: Welcome to Sweden

'Stadsparkens Restaurant, Kalmar, Sweden, 1960s

'It's Midsummer's Eve here in Sweden. All Swedes are not dancing around the maypole in folk costumes. A peaceful dinner for two in a nice spot is sometimes preferred by some.
The vintage postcard above is from Ultra Swank's post "Welcome to Sweden".
Please notice the table flags.

Vintage beverage: Cuba Cola

"Cuba Cola
was the first cola in the Swedish market - introduced in 1953 and still going strong. The label has been kept unchanged over the years and is a good example of true 50s design. The taste is characterized by the robust taste of cola and many think this is what a real cola should taste like." - Krönleins Bryggeri

"The recipe is owned by Saturnus AB of Malmö and it's brewed on license by Vasa bryggeri, Heines bryggeri, Guttsta Källa and Krönleins." - Wikipedia

"Saturnus produced a great many products during the Second World War to supplement products that were in short supply, and thus became even more well known in Swedish households. " / ". At the same time, the trendy post-War fashions from the USA resulted in a great deal of interest in Cola drinks. The debate was heated, and Coca Cola wasn't allowed to market its products in Sweden until 1953. Saturnus was ready - Cuba Cola was launched a few months before Saturnus' American competitor began marketing its products." - Saturnus

"... beating Coca-Cola by three months. The soft drink has in reality nothing to do with the country of Cuba, although it serves as an alternative cola drink to the many anti-American (or anti-globalization) youths of Sweden." - Wikipedia

Art: Robert Rauschenberg, 1925-2008

“Sometimes, it almost feels like Robert Rauschenberg and Moderna Museet are synonymous. In the same way that I can say without hesitation that there is a distinct “before” and “after” Rauschenberg’s appearance on the art scene in the 1950s." says Lars Nittve, Museum Director. (continue reading)

Ephemera: Volvo booklet

The other day
I found a nice vintage Volvo promotional booklet in a thrift store/nostalgia store. The booklet is from the late 50s and written in English. It definitely is promotional material targeting the American market. We follow the American couple Philip and Janis Benson on their trip to "Volvoland" - Sweden.

"They love their Volvo. Every day they get a thrill out of its wonderful driving characteristics - its roadability, convenience, comfort, pick-up, the way it "parks on a dime," and above all, the honest quality built into every inch. They often wondered, "How can a car be this good?" When Phil Benson, instructor at the University of Minnesota, received a year's fellowship from the American-Scandinavian Foundation to study theater in Sweden, he and Janis thought, "Aha! Sweden - now we can drop in and find out what's behind VOLVO QUALITY"

I have made a pdf document (58,9 Mb) out of the whole booklet. You'll find it here (MegaUpload), here (DivShare) or here (Files-Upload)
The file is in rar format and the password is: martinklasch

Art and illustration: John Bauer

The painter/illustrator John Bauer (1882-1918) is not well-known outside of his native country Sweden. In Sweden he is, at least to a older generation, famous and loved for his classic fairy tale illustrations. They were mainly made for the traditional Christmas edition of "Bland tomtar och troll" (Among Gnomes and Trolls ...or something like that), a fairy tale collection published since 1907. Unfortunately he died as young as 36 together with his wife and child in a shipwreck. Following Bauer's death Gustaf Tenggren took over his roll as illustrator of "Bland tomtar och troll". After Tenggren came Einar Norelius (see this earlier post) and he was succeeded by Hans Arnold (see this post).

This post about Bauer was inspired by this post by Stephen Worth of ASIFA who says that Bauer's "...style influenced generations of artists from Gustaf Tenggren ... /... Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielsen to Brian Froud and Jim Henson (The Dark Crystal)." Judge for yourself:

Other sites of interest is The John Bauer Museum and Project Runeberg - Målningar av John Bauer where you can find great scans.

Architecture: Cinema Fontänen in Vällingby

Watch a clip about the building and inauguration of the movie theater Fontänen (clip link) 50 years ago. It was the theater of the equally new Stockholm suburb called Vällingby (clip from inauguration of Vällingby Centrum). That suburb was one of several being built around Stockholm at that time. They were so called new ABC-suburbs/towns. A stood for workplaces, B for living and C for center. Internationally these towns built up from virtually nothing were called, rightfully so, New towns. Vällingby was the first and probably the better one and it caused quite some international interest (and still do among architects and city planners). Today Vällingby is going through major change with outdoor shopping being roofed and so forth, but as it is now a part of Swedish architectural history it has to be done carefully. The Fontänen is no exception. Four salons has been added underground but above ground it pretty much looks like when it first was built.

Exhibition: Stig Lindberg

"Stig Lindberg's (1916-1982) designs for household items – notably ceramics – are familiar to almost all Swedes, as are his illustrations to popular children’s books. The exhibition gives a picture of Stig Lindberg's work as an industrial designer during the latter half of the 20th century."
